Key Stage 4

Within Key Stage 4 Core PE, pupils have the opportunity to pick any option from 3 sports which they would like to do for that block. For those who opt for an examination PE course, one or more of these blocks may be dictated to them. Pupils can choose one the following options in order to gain a GCSE or OCR qualification:

Edexcel GCSE PE
This course is assessed with 30% of the grade coming from practical assessments and 70% coming from theory based assessment, including 2 exams at the end of Year 11. The theory specification covers such topics as: healthy and active lifestyles, influences, exercise and fitness, your personal well-being, psychology of sport, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, muscular system, skeletal system. Within school, teachers will give a practical assessment in the following activities: football, basketball, rugby, hockey, netball, table tennis, badminton, cricket., however activities outside of school can also be assessed. In previous years we have had pupils assessed in horse riding, skiing, snowboarding, gymnastics, athletics, golf and tennis.

OCR Cambridge National Sport
This course is assessed with 75% of the course coming from coursework based assignments, and 25% coming from a 1 hour written exam. Pupils will be assessed in both theory and practical based assignments. During the course, pupils will be assessed in 4 units over 3 years. The mandatory units are: Contemporary Issues in Sport (exam), Developing Sports Skills. The optional units, chosen by staff who will decide which units pupils will have the best chance of succeeding in: Sports Leadership, Sport and the Media, Working in the Sports Industry. Pupils will take part in practical activities such as badminton, basketball, table tennis, tennis and football. This course carries the same weighting as a GCSE subject when applying for Post 16 education.

OCR Cambridge National Outdoor Pursuits
This course course is assessed with 75% of the course coming from coursework based assignments, and 25% coming from a 1 hour written exam. Pupils will be assessed in both theory and practical based assignments. During the course, pupils will be assessed in 4 units over 3 years. The units will be: Contemporary Issues (exam), Developing Sports Skills, Sports Leadership and Developing knowledge and skills in Outdoor Activities. Pupils will take part, and be assessed in, a 10 week course of Rock Climbing at Leeds Climbing Wall, in addition to a number of day walks and 2 overnight camps in the Peak District. They will also have to plan and lead their own Rock Climbing session, which again will take place at Leeds Climbing Wall. This course carries the same weighting as a GCSE subject when applying for Post 16 education.
