Drax Sustainability Work Experience Programme

Twenty-five Year 9 students recently took part in the Drax Sustainability Work Experience Programme, giving them a valuable first‑hand insight into how a major energy company is addressing climate change and working towards a more sustainable future.
During the visit, students learned about Drax’s role in renewable energy production and the steps being taken to reduce carbon emissions. They explored how biomass energy works, the importance of sustainable forestry, and how innovation and technology are being used to support the transition to low‑carbon energy. The programme also highlighted a wide range of careers available within the energy and sustainability sector, helping students to link their learning to real‑world applications.
The day included  a tour of the site, inside and out, interactive activities, and discussions that encouraged students to think critically about environmental issues, renewable energy, and their own responsibility in creating a sustainable future. Students were highly engaged throughout and demonstrated curiosity, enthusiasm, and a growing awareness of how science, engineering and environmental studies connect to future careers.
Overall, the visit was an inspiring and informative experience, helping to raise aspirations, broaden knowledge of sustainability, and support students’ understanding of the challenges and opportunities within the renewable energy industry.
The day trip to the site was part of a three day programme with two of the days involving members of staff from Drax Power Station coming in to school to work with the group.
